You Can Change Your Own Oil!
Getting a change of oil for your car after having driven around 3,000 miles should not always take the action of a professional mechanic. To enjoy substantial savings on money, you can actually do this procedure all by yourself.
The first thing that you need to do is to buy the necessary supplies needed to complete the change of oil procedure. One of the few things you will need is six quarts of oil. It is important to choose the brand which is recommended by a mechanic or a brand which you trust. Remember that you should never mix oil of different brands.
Every time change oil is done, it is also important to note that there is a need for a new oil filter as well. Choose an oil filter that is appropriate for your car. An oil pan is also needed to empty the oil. For the oil pan to be recycled easily, choose the one that can seal. You will also need an oil filter wrench to complete the oil change procedure.
If you have all items ready, you can now start change of oil procedure. The first thing which should be done is put your vehicle in an elevated position using your car trolley jack and for extra safety vehicle jack stands. Have it elevated just enough to access the engine’s underside. Once it is already elevated, take off from the engine the oil fill cap then get underneath the engine.
Have the oil pan cover the entire bottom part of the engine then take off the hexagon-shaped pan drain plug as you put the oil pan underneath. You will need the socket wrench in order to make the plug loosen a bit before the oil will start to come out. Replace the plug and have it tightened once the oil is drained properly.
Next, use a wrench to rotate the filter counter-clockwise until the oil comes off. Unscrew it from the engine with your hands then place the oil pan to catch the dripping oil from the filter. Put the new filter. Make sure to coat the gasket of the new filter with oil so that it can be easily removed in the future. Screw the filter tightly into the pipe.
Get oil the equipments underneath then have the car down from elevation. Fill the engine with five quarts of oil, put the cap back, check oil level, start the car, and let it idle for five minutes. Make sure there is no leak. Check the oil level again until it shows the sign “full”.
