This car was originally built with a 427 wedge but was replaced with the SOHC engine and a 4 speed transmission. Of the 13 Mustangs that were sent to Holman Moody to be built there are only 5 known to still exist so this is indeed a rare find! </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The 5.0 Mustang is one of the most popular cars found on the drag strip today. With their generous power to weight ratio as built, and the vast availability of aftermarket performance parts, it&#8217;s easy to see why.</p>

1.Tires: Improving traction by installing a set of sticky racing type tires, should always be your first modification. The 5.0 Mustang&#8217;s factory fitted rubber is woefully inadequate for the racing surface. A simple change to a drag radial tire can often bring about a dramatic reduction in the cars quarter-mile ET. For a strictly track car or a more serious street/strip ride a Mickey Thompson <a title="ET Street" href="http://www.bestracingtips.com/on-race-track-info/5-0-mustang-tires/" target="_blank">ET Street</a> tire or an ET Drag slick, will lower ET&#8217;s even more.</p>
<p>2. Gearing: Now that we&#8217;ve improved the traction off the starting line, it&#8217;s time to change the rear-end gear ratio to a more drag strip friendly ratio. Stick shift cars came factory fitted with 3.08 gears, automatics came with an even higher 2.73 gear ratio. Neither one is optimal for racing, a change to a 3.73 ratio should enable your 5.0 Mustang to shave off 3 or 4 tenth&#8217;s in the quarter. If you want even more performance out of your car a set of 4.10&#8242;s will really increase your rate of acceleration. The difference in ratio&#8217;s will result in lower fuel economy, if you do a lot of highway driving. If you do mostly low speed around town driving, the difference in fuel mileage will not be as noticeable.</p>
<p>3. Exhaust: The 5.0 Mustang comes from the factory with shorty exhaust headers. While not optimized for horsepower, because of the small diameter and numerous kinks and bends, they&#8217;ll do for now. Changing to an aftermarket shorty header will only show minimal hp gains. So unless you&#8217;re ready to step up to the plate and go for long tube headers, spend your money on a exhaust system instead. Low restriction catalytic convertors an H or X pipe, and 2 1/2&#8243; pipes with a low restriction muffler is the way to go for more power. Non street driven cars can use an off-road H or X pipe (NO CATS) and pick up even more HP.</p>
<p>4. Intake: A cold air intake fitted with a low restriction air filter, like a K&amp;N is one of the most popular mods on the 5.0 Mustang for good reason. They provide an easy to install boost to your ride for a very low price. Changing the throttle body to a 65mm model can also boost performance and be changed in less than one hour.</p>
<p>5. Alternator Cutout: An alternator cutout is another easy and inexpensive way to lower your ET by a 1/10 second. By wiring a simple on-off single pole toggle switch in series with the alternators field lead, you&#8217;ll eliminate all parasitic drag from the alternators magnetic field. Horsepower drain can be 10 or more at high RPM. Just don&#8217;t forget to turn the switch back on before you head home, or you may end up stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery.</p>
<p>By combining all these <a title="Racing Tips" href="http://www.bestracingtips.com/on-race-track-info/5-0-mustang-on-the-starting-line/" target="_blank">racing tips</a> you should see a substantial reduction in ET and a corresponding gain in top end MPH. Which just might give you enough to beat that guy in the other lane, and that&#8217;s what it&#8217;s all about isn&#8217;t it.</p>
