One of the biggest automakers in the world, General Motors’ roots date all the way back to 1908. Its main headquarters is situated in the heart of Detroit, with over 205,000 employees in 157 countries, producing cars in around 31 of them.

Perhaps no other muscle car can match General Motors’ Pontiac GTO. A popular American muscle car for sale back then, the Pontiac GTO is a combination of both beauty and power. It earned a reputation as a top American muscle car during its hayday, and would keep its popularity for many years.

Furthermore, it had a relatively affordable price compared to top cars from BMW and Mercedes-Benz which cost, on average, more than $50,000.

The Pontiac GTO was also meant to attract buyers and improve sales for General Motors since it was released to the market in 1964. However, it almost never made it to production at all, when General Motors released and edict banning all company involvement in racing activities, and a reduction of the engine’s displacement to 10 pounds or less. The GTO would have technically, violated this edict, but the go ahead was given anyway. The gamble paid off, as the GTO would become a success upon its release.

In 1966, the engine size of the Pontiac GTO was increased to a size of 316 cubic inches. This was made possible by expanding the bore of the car’s engine bay. Compared to the 1966 model, the 1967 GTO did not have much difference except for its chrome mesh texture in the grill. Moreover, “Rally II” wheels were included in the newer model. While these changes were considered minor by many, they contributed to the car’s improved performance.

By the year 1970, the GTO was redesigned to suit the 1970′s lifestyle. Its front was modified to make way for four exposed headlamps. A 455cid engine was added as well, paving the way for what was becoming a market trend during that time. What made the 1970 GTO different from the other models was the inclusion of a Vacuum Operated Exhaust. This paved the way for the simplification of using a rod to open the exhaust power. Despite the improvements, production would cease, and would take almost 25 years to be revived, between 2004, and 2006.

The most modern GTO models were, like its predecessors, equipped with high performance engineering, but featured what many consider to be a more conservative aesthetic style when compared to its rivals, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Charger, which featured more traditional “muscle” elements.

In 2006, the last production GTO rolled off the assembly line.
